![]() (Sigmund Freud lived just round the corner.) Almost all of the children were prodigiously talented. Three of Ludwig’s brothers committed suicide, including one whose first spoken word was “Oedipus”. The whole family was a seething cauldron of psychosomatic disorders. Karl Wittgenstein was a fabulously rich steel magnate and high-class crook who rigged prices, bled his workers dry and did much the same to his timorous wife Leopoldine. He was born into a patrician Viennese family in 1889, the son of the wealthiest industrialist in the Habsburg empire. In the course of the book he dismisses as “lurid” rumours that Wittgenstein was gay, though he was indeed gay and seemed to feel little guilt about it.Ī lot more had happened to him than sleeping with other men, however. The same can’t be said about one of his closest friends, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, about whom my tutor wrote a rather stiff little memoir. This man’s problem was not that something appalling had happened to him, but that nothing had happened to him at all. ![]()

Misty of chincoteague 19476/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The team focused on the horse’s mitochondrial DNA, a type of DNA passed down from an animal’s mother, which is plentiful in most cells. Although they had tempered expectations-ancient DNA often degrades in muggy, tropical conditions- the horse’s tooth yielded a remarkable amount of genetic information. ![]() The lucky horse tooth, he says, was discovered not in a midden, but in the vicinity of where Puerto Real’s church once stood.Īfter freezing and pulverizing a sample of the tooth, Delsol and his colleagues processed the powder and sent it off to a lab for sequencing. Of the 127,000 Puerto Real animal specimens housed at the university’s Florida Museum of Natural History, only eight belong to horses. For that reason, cattle bones are plentiful in the town’s middens, or trash heaps, which are now a treasure trove of information for archaeologists.īecause horses were prized status symbols at the time, however, they were rarely butchered, making them rare in the fossil record, says Delsol. Colonists imported Spanish horses from southern Europe to help herd cattle, which were raised both for their hides and as food. “I was studying cows, but stumbled across this incredible piece of horse data.” From a colonial horse’s mouthįounded in 1503, just 10 years after Christopher Columbus reached the Caribbean, Puerto Real was a prominent Spanish ranching hub surrounded by fertile pasturelands. ![]()

Still Black Remains by Kevin Michaels6/24/2023 ![]() This is for the most part, a trope exclusive to fantastic settings. Also contrast Louis Cypher, which are names that indicate someone is a/the devil these may include a normal first name (especially a variant of Lou/Lucy or Nick) but overall are not normal names because they're too much of a pun. Contrast with Names to Run Away from Really Fast, which is about evil people with Obviously Evil names. Bonus points if it manages to be meaningful or ironic. Tom the Dark Lord sometimes goes hand in hand with Embarrassing First Name, but not always. ![]() While generally Played for Laughs, this can also be used to chilling effect in combination with tropes such as From Nobody to Nightmare and/or Paranoia Fuel. Steinbeck john the grapes of wrath6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel about migrant Central Valley fruit pickers, peopled with robustly two-dimensional characters and dripping like an okra pod with hokey dialog, shameless sentimentality and corn-pone Marxism, is already inflicted by teachers on high school students all over California and elsewhere, along with those two other monuments of preachy mediocre fiction, “The Catcher in the Rye” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.”īut now the torture is escalating. This month marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of “The Grapes of Wrath.” Which means it’s time to trample out the vintage of the Grapes of Mush. ![]()

A Man And A Woman by Robin Schone6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Megan blinked at Muhamed’s peremptory manner. “You will not wear a corset to our picnic.” Shadow had cloaked her nakedness before the thin cotton chemise would not conceal the changes that age had wrought in her body-breasts that were too soft hips that were too rounded. “Oh.” She flushed, suddenly, painfully aware of the sunshine that warmed her back and starkly revealed a patch of chipped paint on the wall behind him. “They did not have a picnic basket,” he said without preamble. And perforce had to step back to prevent Muhamed from walking over her.Ī black cloak billowed after him. The entire inn would know that Muhamed sought entrance to her room if he continued knocking. Stomach roiling with nervous anticipation, she coiled the braid on top of her head and secured it with pins. “One moment!” she called out, mouth full of hairpins. Hurriedly, she slipped into her chemise and rebraided her hair. They belonged to a woman who was resigned to widowhood, not to a woman who planned upon demonstrating to a eunuch that he was a man. She realized with dismay that all of her clothes were black. ![]() Megan pulled out a black skirt and bodice. ![]() |
